LETTER: Event centre reminiscent of other city hall bungles

To the editor:

Are we remembering the Ontario Ministry of Finance has already given our gang at city hall a 7.86  per cent increase in each of four years? Also in 2015.

So if you add on the two to four per cent the city adds on over the past three years our taxes have risen, well over 30 per cent, with 2015 it will likely be more like a 50 per cent increase, showing the Chamber of Commerce’s projections were likely quite accurate.

We don't need another Keskus,Victoriaville Mall or casino which were all foisted on taxpayers by City Hall – although admittedly different council, but  one singing the same tune.

Keskus, the Casino and Victoriaville were built to save the areas. To me it doesn't appear they did a very good job as saviors.
The event centre, being sold by its proponents the same way, will undoubtedly have the same results.

Why don't the proponents, come up with their own money and build it themselves, and get out of the pockets and purses of taxpayers, if it's such a great thing?

Does the casino pay the normal rate of property tax, being a provincial building, or does it get some favoured rate?
