EDITORIAL: Hobbs to sue bully

The anonimity of the Internet has created a whole new breed of ugly in the world. Just ask Mayor Keith Hobbs.

The anonimity of the Internet has created a whole new breed of ugly in the world.

Just ask Mayor Keith Hobbs.

In the aftermath of last October’s municipal election, Hobbs decided to close his social media accounts after being harrassed and insulted by those who didn’t like the mayor or what he stands for.

The attacks didn’t stop, however.

This month Hobbs uncovered what he described as vile and vulgar comments directed toward him and his family, his new bride Marissa in particular.

Hobbs decided enough is enough and is taking the unnamed individual to court.

Good for you, Mr. Mayor. The Internet trolls need to be taken down a notch or two and taught they don’t have the right to say anything they want without repercussion.

Sure, they’ll cry their freedom of speech has been stomped on.

Not even close.

Public officials are ripe for criticism. It wouldn’t be a democracy otherwise. But there’s a line, and too many people think they can cross it and nothing will be done.

Attacking Hobbs’ policies or his stance on the event centre is fair game. Attacking his wife just because she’s his wife and spreading rumours and lies is something completely different.
