LETTER: Event-centre money could be spent in better ways

To the editor: I am in full agreement that Mayor Keith Hobbs should start acting like a mayor for the taxpayers of Thunder Bay.

To the editor:

I am in full agreement that Mayor Keith Hobbs should start acting like a mayor for the taxpayers of Thunder Bay.

All the expenses that have been incurred to date on the proposed event centre would have been better spent on the resurfacing of our deplorable roads.

In a Feb. 5 editorial on tbnewswatch.com, it says “in a recent tbnewswatch.com poll, as unscientific as it may be, 73 per cent of respondents said the city should suspend the event centre pursuit, given current budget pressures.”

Perhaps the city should do a mail-out survey and include it along with the March water bill. A return envelope to a third party, such as the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, should be included where the results could be manually counted and opened for public scrutiny, as it would now appear the vast majority do not support a new event centre.

We also have a proposed water-bill increase of 11.8 per cent to all taxpayers.

The mayor stated in his address to the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce that the city needs to wok side-by-side with city residents. At budget time he asks for our support. But when it comes to spending projects he acts like we do not exist.

M.H.N. Martyn,
Thunder Bay
