EDITORIAL: Exercise caution on roads

Driving on frozen, snow and ice covered roads is an everyday act that most people take for granted. But, as two major crashes have reminded us recently, just one wrong move behind the wheel can lead to unspeakably tragic consequences.

Driving on frozen, snow and ice covered roads is an everyday act that most people take for granted.

But, as two major crashes have reminded us recently, just one wrong move behind the wheel can lead to unspeakably tragic consequences.

Last Friday’s crash on Oliver Road which took the lives of a couple of 22-year-olds who had just moved to the city comes about a week after a serious Arthur Street incident resulted in serious injuries to three people, including two 24-year-olds.

While no life is more valuable than another, these four were looking at bright futures. Two young, precious lives have been ended too soon, leaving their family and friends to grieve while two others have likely been irreparably changed, potentially leading to lifelong impacts.

While we don’t yet know what caused those crashes, we must do everything we can to ensure there is no more heartbreak on local roadways. Stay alert, keep your eyes on the road and do everything possible to reach your destination safely even if it means being a few minutes late, ignoring that text message or leaving the coffee in the cup holder.

It’s just not worth what could happen. Remember, as a driver you have a responsibility not only to yourself and your passengers but everybody else on the road.

Please, be careful out there.
