To the editor:

In a letter to the editor published on February 26, MP Robert Sopuck (Dauphin-Swan River – Marquette), presumably in his role as Chair of the Conservative Hunting and Angling Caucus, states that the Liberals have pledged to bring back the long-gun registry if elected. This statement is not true.

It seems as though the Conservative MP for Dauphin-Swan River – Marquette is confused, or maybe attempting to confuse the constituents in Thunder Bay-Superior North and Thunder Bay-Rainy River.

Justin Trudeau has been clear through public statements and in personal communication with me that he has no intention of bringing back the long-gun registry.

Further, in an article dated December 3, 2014, Joan Bryden of the Canadian Press wrote that Trudeau reiterated on Dec. 2, 2014 that he would not reinstate the gun registry, even in a modified form.

To be clear, a Liberal government under Justin Trudeau will not reinstate the long-gun registry if elected. Hunters in Northwestern Ontario can be assured that they will be able to continue to enjoy hunting without a long gun registry.

Patty Hajdu,
Liberal Candidate
Thunder Bay Superior North
