LETTER: Website is racist in nature

To the editor: Re: “Sites not really racist” ( Thunder Bay Source – May 28, 2015) I’m not surprised you withheld your name (although I’m surprised the newspaper agreed to do so).

Re: “Sites not really racist” (Thunder Bay Source – May 28, 2015)

I’m not surprised you withheld your name (although I’m surprised the newspaper agreed to do so). The site’s not racist?

Tell that to the guy who keeps posting “white power” on there. “Someone who’s willing to show what’s really out there?” Are you kidding me?

Are you actually implying that it’s somehow heroic to post pictures of people living with addiction and poverty on a website?
Do you really think that only happens in Thunder Bay? Do you really think that by posting pictures of it online you’re raising awareness or helping your city?

All you’re doing is using the weakest members of our community for your own entertainment. That’s it. Nothing heroic. Nothing brave. Nothing new.

Bullies have done the same thing for years.

And that’s all you are. You’re just hiding behind your keyboards and cell phones instead of in the bushes or the alley.
The saddest drunk on the street has more integrity than any of you. The truly  dirty Thunder Bay is the community of people liking and operating that Facebook page.

Children are reading and viewing what you post, and what you are teaching them is to laugh at the unfortunate.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Try opening your heart instead of your mouth.

Pick up some trash. Organize a neighbourhood clean-up. Support initiatives to provide decent affordable housing and treat mental health issues.

Volunteer to work with youth and give them alternatives to gangs and substance abuse.

But don’t try to tell us that your bullying tactics are noble attempts at enlightenment.

We’re not that stupid.

Cindy Spackman,
Thunder Bay
