OPINION: Legalized, taxed marijuana only makes sense

It seems ridiculous that in 2015 this is even still an argument. Those opposed are almost in the rear view mirror of history, looking similar to those old black-and-white photographs of the temperance movement, a quaint and archaic snapshot.

Marijuana should be legalized, regulated and taxed.

Legalized so that police and court resources can be put to better use, regulated for the health of consumers so they know what they're getting and taxed so that everyone, not just criminals as they're currently the only ones making a substantial financial gain, can benefit.

Colorado, which legalized pot in 2013, has made $88 million in tax revenue so far just this year from the plant.

It's estimated that police in this country seize more than $2 billion worth of pot and cannabis derivatives every year. Legalization would take that cash out of criminal hands and into public and private coffers.

Imagine the housing first strategies, mental health and substance use programs tax dollars like that could leverage?

Regulation, along with users no longer having to rely on the word of dealers to know what they're ingesting, could open up a whole new industry similar to wine country. Arguments against legalization say that people would choose to grow it themselves. That may be true to a point but consider your friend's home-made wine compared to even the cheapest bottle at the liquor store. Which would you choose?

Legalization is also not encouragement in the same way that the LCBO is not condoning binge drinking. Have you ever in your life met anyone who said "I would love to try marijuana but it's illegal?"

Let users burn one in peace in the comfort of their home with a sales tax.
