LETTER: Memorial Avenue bike lanes not necessary

To the editor:

I'm a big supporter of bike lanes and bike paths in the city. I ride my bike a lot, both to get to work and for recreation.

But I don't buy the argument that a protected bike lane along Memorial Avenue is necessary for cyclists to have a safe route from the north end of the city to the south end.

I live near Centennial Park and work near Westfort.

You can't get much more north-to-south than that in Thunder Bay.

I ride my bike clear across the city in under forty minutes, following bike paths and side streets.

The only busy street I have to ride on is James Street, and even then it's only the last 400 metres of my ride.

If council wants cyclists to be able to ride to the mall or the movies, I can see the need for a bike lane on Memorial.

But if their main concern is for the safety of people riding across town, we already have that infrastructure in place. All it takes is a city map and a little planning.
