LETTER: City police need Aboriginal policing services unit

Why can't the Thunder Bay Police Station have an Aboriginal Policing Services Unit like the Toronto Police Headquarters? It will help build positive communications instead of reactionary attitudes.

Why can't the Thunder Bay Police Station have an Aboriginal Policing Services Unit like the Toronto Police Headquarters?

It will help build positive communications instead of reactionary attitudes. It will also help with better working relationships with the Aboriginal community and stop the racist treatment of the Thunder Bay Aboriginal peoples.

The Toronto Police Force also operate community trailers in the various neighbourhoods to talk to the youth and their families on their services.

The courts in Toronto also have the court judges understand the Aboriginal culture. For example, there was a break and enter at my place and my kids saw two black teens and two white teens come out when we were arriving.

The police officer investigated and attended court with me five months later. The judge said that I did not have to swear on the Bible and explain what had happened.

I was the only Native person in the filled up courtroom. The parents of the teens were told to pay for what their sons did.
