There weren’t too many balls OF Tanner Nivins couldn’t track down in the Border Cats outfield, and his prowess with the leather didn’t go unnoticed.

The Kitchener native, who finished the 2010 season with a.991 fielding percentage, on Thursday was named a winner of a Rawlings Finest in the Field Award, recognized as one of the top three fielding outfielders in the Northwoods League.

He was joined on the squad by teammate Ty Wosleger, who topped all first basemen with a .994 percentage.

The complete list of winners include:

Catcher: Chadd Krist, Brainerd
1B: Ty Wosleger, Thunder Bay
2B: Mikel Alvarez, Alexandria
SS: Brad Zapenas, Green Bay
3B: Tommy Reyes, Brainerd
OF: Jordan Smith, Willmar
OF: Tony Mueller, La Crosse
OF: Tanner Nivins, Thunder Bay
P: David Carroll, Willmar

To qualify for the award, a player must appear in two-thirds of the scheduled games at the position, with the exception of catcher, which is half. For pitchers the hurler with the most number of defensive chances without committing an error was selected.

Wosleger and Nivins are two guys I'd love to see back (if eligible). Ty did a hell of a job especially seeing how he was just on a 10 day contract and earned his spot.

My question is how Nivins never cracked Top 50 lists done by other baseball ranking organizations.
