Thomson scores 23, LU wins handily

Heading into Friday's second-half opener, the Western Mustangs were the only men's team in the OUA West with a losing basketball record.

They didn't get any closer to .500 on this night.

Ryan Thomson buried 23 points as the Lakehead Thunderwolves rolled to an easy 91-73 win to maintain a share of top spot in the division with an 8-1 record.

Yoosrie Salhia scored 18 points for LU, who also got a 12-point, seven-assist performance from Venzal Russell.

Thunder Bay's Matt Schmidt chipped in 10 in just 13 minutes of work, including a pair of three-pointers. Ryan Barbeau had 24 to lead all scorers for the Mustangs, while Peter Scholtes scored 19 in a losing cause.

"A great start was the key to the win tonight and much credit to Western for battling hard after their slow first quarter," said LU coach Scott Morrison.

"We were fortunate to have shot well from the outside because Western won the battle of penetration tonight including two all-star calibre performances from Barbeau and Scholtes. I expect both teams to make some adjustments tonight and expect to see a 40-minute OUA West battle again tomorrow night. We are definetly going to have to do a better job making Scholtes catches tougher and keeping Barbeau outside of the paint on his dribble."
