A single lap around ensured Wes Semler won his first Thunderwolves Indoor Marathon.

Semler ran for the first time at the third annual indoor marathon at the Lakehead University Hanger on Sunday.  About 250 participants ran in support of the Thunder Bay Children Centre. Participants ran in four categories that included the full marathon, half-marathon, 10 kilometres and team relay.

Semler finished with a time of 2:59:26 followed closely behind by Scott Weibe at 2:59:53. A single lap kept the two runners at a distance.

Semler said having Weibe hot on his heels helped to motivate him through the run.

“It’s really tough to go 211 laps around the track,” Semler said. “This would have been really, really tough without Scott. If I hadn’t put a lap on him in the first half, he probably would have come out ahead. He did all the work to drag me that last 45 minutes.”

After the two-hour mark, he said that’s when it became harder to run.  Despite the competition, he said the support from friends and family helped to push him past the pain.

He said he enjoyed the indoor track because it gave him a chance to see all the spectators.

Weibe said he was happy with coming in second and added it’s difficult to make up that one lap.

“You have to make a whole lap even though it’s only 200 metres,” Weibe said. “You have to do a whole lap ahead.”

Keli Cristofaro took home her third indoor marathon for best time for a female runner.

“It is a hat trick, I never thought of that before,” Cristofaro said. “It’s such a good event. I really like doing (marathons). Some people think I’m a little crazy to do 211 laps but this marathon is good. It’s guaranteed weather and there’s so much support.”

Although she was the only female runner on the track, she said it isn’t about who she’s running against because she’s always competing against herself.

“I try to beat my time from the year before or try to steady my time because there are no other women this year,” she said.
