Matt Caria has been handed a two-game suspension for a racial slur aimed at Western’s Yashar Farmanara.

Caria, who leads the Lakehead Thunderwolves with 24 points in 17 games, was kicked out of Saturday’s 1-0 loss to the Mustangs after skating past the Western bench and having words with Farmanara, who is of Middle Eastern descent. The two were teammates on last year's University Games team.

Lakehead athletic director Tom Warden on Tuesday said the suspension was agreed to upon by the school, Ontario University Athletics and officials at Western.

“Incidents like this we obviously take very seriously,” Warden said, reached by phone. “It is our goal to deal with them swiftly and expediently. Matthew has been suspended for two games … and he has been asked to apologize to the player in question.

“He’s been asked to apologize to the administration at the University of Western Ontario. He’s been asked to apologize to the officials who were doing the game on the night of the incident, and he’s been asked to apologize to the program and his teammates.”

Caria, 23, is a native of Sault Ste. Marie and in his third season in a Thunderwolves uniform. He leads the team, which dropped out of the top 10 national rankings on Tuesday, with 74 penalty minutes.

Warden said it’s completely out of Caria’s character to utter a racial slur. Warden wouldn’t say what it was Caria said to Farmanara.

“Matthew understands completely what he’s done is wrong … He feels awful. He understands that the student athlete’s role is to be a leader and he understands that as a role model and a leader that it’s not behaviour that’s acceptable,” Warden said.
“He more than accepts the punishment.”

Lakehead coach Joel Scherban, contacted for reaction, would not comment, deferring the matter to Warden.

Why would anyone make light of this? This is horrible news for Thunder Bay and Lakehead.

Chez, I am disappointed in your response. I will list a number of minorities and you tell me which ones are ok for the Lakehead University hockey team to slur

Circle yes or no Chez:

Blacks - YES or NO

Hispanics YES or NO

Natives YES or NO

Asians YES or NO

Jews - YES or NO

Muslims YES or NO

Gays YES or NO

Do you get it Chez ? The answer is always NO. Its not ok. Frankly as an Alumnus of Lakehead University, I am embarrassed by this whole matter.

Not to get technical with your list but the term Asians could cover almost your entire list. I'm pretty sure, last time I checked anyway, that Israel was in Asia; the religion of Islam began in what we now call Asia; that there are black people that live in Asia; that there are homosexuals living in Asia; and the term "Native" can be assigned to anyone who is from an area, hence I am a native of Thunder Bay. I am going to assume you were actually referring to the geographic area of South East Asia, which is the common mistake people make.

I'm not surprised about this story: Caria seems to play with emotion and obviously let his emotions get the better of him in this situation.

For a school attempting to attract International students, Lakehead should put Caria on academic probation and have him apologize to his own student body.

Obviously not. Someone doesn't say something racially derogatory at his age without having done it in the past. Quite obviously this is absolutely in his character.

He's sorry because he's in hot water over it, not because he did it in the first place.

The Thunderwolves are privately owned, and the owners are free to run their team anyway they want to. The team does however play under the name Lakehead University in this venture. That means they should conduct themselves with the deportment befitting the University.

This may be true, but they are part of the Ontario University Athletics. In addition they represent Lakehead University, Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario Region.

Needless to say it is unacceptable to make these types of comments to another person in society in todays day and age.

Whether they are privately owned or not, I am sure the owners do not want this type of representation for their business!

But its not out of character for him to spear butt end, slash, yell at the ref, throw a water bottle at the ref...yes throw a water bottle at the ref..Caria is a selfish player and he is what's wrong with our program..Discipline!

He's a good guy and people should be a little more understanding. It's definitely not alright to use racial slurs, and he knows that. The player on Western and Caria apparently were roommates together last year and are good friends.

Chez,
Stoning is a punishment that is included in the laws in seven countries including Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Sudan, Iran, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, and some states in Nigeria. You are a complete idiot for making this reference, no better than Caria. Do you think it is funny to make another comment based on this young man's nationality? You are a relic.

People in Canada do not consider getting stoned a punishment!

Seriously people enough!

So critical of such a sad situation. Sad for both players that have been subjected to all this community abuse. Matt Caria may be a hot headed hockey player on the ice, and may say and do things that are not right on the ice - It was a HUGE game for them - Intense ... and Emotions ran high - not only for Matt but for his team, the Western Team, coaches and also to a sell out crowd who came to watch both nights.

What happened DOES NOT define Matt Caria in anyway. All these toxic, negative comments are no better than what was said on the ice.

Let it go! Leave it be ... Matt Caria has paid the price for bad choice of words in a heated moment.

This situation does not define the Thunderwolves in anyway .... we have a great bunch of players who grew up breathing hockey. Go Wolves GO! ... Move forward with a out of town sweep this weekend.

@Hockeyfan:

I partially agree with you hockeyfan, I feel that this was an isolated incident, and is in no way reflective of the hockey team as a whole. The player was suspended, and it is time to put it behind us, and move on.
