Draw 2 wasn't nearly as successful for Thunder Bay's contingent at the Northern Ontario men's curling championship in Sault Ste. Marie.

Skips Mike Assad, Joe Scharf and Jeff Currie were all handed their first loss of the event, after winning earlier in the day in their opening matches.

Colin Koivula, who lost his opening game to Sudbury's Tim Phillips, was doubled by defending champion Brad Jacobs 6-3 in the nightcap to fall to 0-2.

Joe Scharf, who lost to Jacobs in last year's Northern Ontario final, was humiliated Sunday by Copper Cliff's Mike Jakubo, who used steals of three in both the fifth and sixth end to break open a 2-1 contest en route to an 8-1 win that ended with four ends to play.

Scharf needed an extra end earlier in the day to beat Robbie Gordon 7-6.

Assad made easy work of Patrick Gelinas in his opening game, putting away the 10-2 victory with four in the seventh. But luck wasn't on his side in his second match against Stratton's Trevor Bonot.

Bonot scored one in the ninth to go up 5-4 and stole a pair in the 10th to make the final 7-4.

Meanwhile Currie gave up singles in the ninth and 10th to fall 7-5 to Sudbury's Jordan Chandler.
He beat Bonot 6-4 in his opener.

Jacobs, Jakubo and Phillips are tied atop the standings with 2-0 records.
