Joe Scharf rebounded nicely Monday in his bid to return to the championship game at the Northern Ontario men's curling championship in Sault Ste. Marie.

Scharf handily won both his matches of Day 2 to improve to 3-1, knocking off fellow Thunder Bay skip Jeff Currie 8-2 in the afternoon draw and doubling MacIntyre's David McInnes 8-4 in the evening contest.

Scharf and defending champion Brad Jacobs, who stole three in the 10th end a year ago to end Scharf's dreams of a Brier return, are tied for third behind Copper Cliffs' Mike Jakubo and Sudbury's Tim Phillips, who sit at 4-0.

Currie in turn knocked Jacobs from the ranks of the unbeaten in his second game of the day, scoring five in the 10th end to cruise to a 9-3 triumph and sits at 2-2.

He's tied with Thunder Bay's Mike Assad foursome. Assad beat Sudbury's Jordan Chandler to open the day, but fell 7-5 to Phillips in the evening.

Also in the mix at 2-2 is Thunder Bay's fourth and final rink, led by skip Colin Koivula.

After dropping his first two matches of the championship, Koivula raced back to .500 on Monday, knocking off Patrick Gelinas 7-4 and scoring one in the 11th to edge Chandler for his second win of the day.
