Cats drop second-half opener in Mankato

With runners on second and third and down by a run in the ninth, the Border Cats bats went silent.

Neither Brett Kay, who lined to second, nor Scott Donley, who lined to short, could get the ball out of the infield as the Cats dropped a 5-4 decision to the first-half champion Mankato Moon Dogs Thursday night.

It was Mankato’s 10th straight triumph.

Donley and Justin Higley each hit homeruns for the Cats (0-1), with Dan Ludwig (2-2) taking the loss after surrendering eight hits and five earned runs in seven innings of work. Donley was 3-for-5 with two runs scored to improve his average to a team-high .331.
