The Thunderwolves are hitting the small screen in Thunder Bay.

Starting with Friday’s home-opener against a much improved York Lions squad, Lakehead hockey fans will be able to watch recorded broadcasts of all of the team’s home games this season through an interactive application available exclusively on Tbaytel’s digital TV service.

Tom Warden, the school’s athletic director, called the service an awesome tool to expose the team to the entire community.

“It’s awesome,” Warden said. “It just highlights all the things that are important about Thunderwolves hockey and shows what quality television Tbaytel is putting forward.
“We’re really, really happy about being involved with this and really happy with this announcement here today.”

Warden added there’s plenty to like about the service, and not just the video replays of their games, which will be available on the following Mondays.

“Everybody has some time to kill and wants to watch a little television. As well, you can update yourself on what’s going on with the team. There are news stories on there and you can update yourself on the roster and Twitter and some of the other happenings,” Warden said.

The service is free to all Tbaytel digital TV subscribers.

Don Campbell, the municipally owned utility’s outgoing president and CEO, said he’s carefully watched the service developed and there’s a good reason why the Wolves were chosen.

“Lakehead University and the Thunderwolves are very important to us. And as part of our launch of TV we’ve been very interested in providing local things, like the way I look at it, no one else will but us,” Campbell said.

“Things like the bus routes and the airport times. Thunderwolves hockey was just a logical extension. We have a lot of people in town that love the Thunderwolves and they can’t go because they’re infirm or sick or whatever. This just opens up a whole can of worms in terms of the people who can get exposed.”

Campbell’s hoping the NHL lockout will make the service an instant success.

“We’re a little lean on hockey these days and this is a great opportunity for them to build their brand as a provider of entertainment here in Thunder Bay.”

The team already streams all of its games live on the Internet on the SSN network.

"The service is free to all Tbaytel digital TV subscribers" Oh ya, I forgot about the tbay tel monopoly....I guess the rest of us aren't from tbay so it doesn't matter.....like usual

Umm...What TbayTel Monopoly? This is Talking about TbayTel TV, which is relatively new for TbayTel. Shaw, and Bell TV have been here for years and it is TbayTel who is has freshly entered the TV Market. Bell and Virgin (same) have also launched Mobility October 3rd. What monopoly is it you speak of? Educate yourself, read the news and get informed before you post stupidity. Bell and Shaw do not broadcast the games, it goes to show that TbayTel gives back to its community by supporting its community initiatives and sports.

Hoping they broadcast live council meetings as well and soon!

TBaytel is the last company to enter tv market Shaw is dominant and bell is next both have satilite coverage as well so whats the problem? It seems to me to be a generational cap thing cause tbaytel not catching up with other cell providers that bring on the negative cell comments to a tv story?

This is great news! Now with less people attending the actual games the city and it's tax payers do not have to flush millions of dollars down the drain on an overpriced multiplex!

I think TBayTel's main priority right now should be fixing their HSPA cellular network.

Love this article. I now know I can watch the Thunderwolves live on the internet.

This is a great initiative, and should be good for the Thunderwolves and their fans.

However, I guess if they are only showing recorded games then you won't be able to get the games in real time. I can't say I'm surprised, since Tbaytel can't deliver text messages in real time either.

becker says:
They deliver messages fine actually. Have you ever heard of a service outage before? Get a life bozo, cell service goes down, power goes out, cars break down and people get sick. This is life. I called them yesterday and the outage is repaired, my texts work fine. Narrow minded people in this city its unbelievable. This is a good article with good news about TV and Lakehead Thunderwolves...but of course people would use this as an opportunity to knock their cell service, wow.

trent says:
A temporary service outage is understandable. However, that doesn't make up for the fact that 2 years after the Rogers transition, cell service within the city is still slow and unreliable. Dropped calls, missed texts, and slow data. It's great that the CEO could step out for a photo op with the Thunderwolves, but why isn't he on the phone with Rogers, Ericcson or whoever supplies their cellular equipment RIGHT NOW? No more excuses.

becker says:
Wow...wow...Do you seriously believe that he goes to work everyday and does nothing? I had some issues with my phone last year and after work they have done, I have not had a single issue with service other than the outage. These things take time and just because you and other people do not see a fix yet, does not mean its not happening. What do you want him to do when he calls Rogers or Ericsson? Tell them to waive a magic wand and fix it? Buddy, educate yourself, you are in dire need of it.

Tiredofit says:
Becker, I for one still experience several issues a week with their cell service, they may have fixed some issues, however I don't consider ongoing issues that most still experience a number of issues weekly an improve, net in service, they are trying to grow to become this big conglomerate, however in order to do so you need to provide a solid service. The occasional outage and dropped call is fine, say once in a blue moon, that's acceptable not the current crap we receive

Base on that service alone, they will never get my TV and Internet monies. I don't blame the staff, most are more frustrated and pissed that the clients, it's just a few at the top who spread them thin and expect them to produce top notch products with substandard equipment and lack of proper training.

Hey TBaytel, why dont you try fixing your cell service first before you have no more customers left??!!

youngintbay says:
Didnt Tbaytel try this before? And it failed? And that sucks for those who have shaw and bell.

becker says:
I agree that it is not that great for Bell and Shaw customers, but that just goes to show you that TbayTel stands behind its advertising "We are in the Neighbourhood". Sponsoring local sports and bringing it to the living room of its customers. If Shaw and Bell do not offer you this, its because their "neighbourhood", is Canada they do not care about some small town sports team. Good luck getting anything of this sort from them.

Digital television is a different department of TBayTel then the cell service. I understand that people are upset about the cell service the company provides, but no one should be using that as an excuse to put down the accomplishment the TV department achieved. What they did will not only benefit them, but the Thunderwolves as well. Great Job TBayTel!

So a locally owned company tries to endorse a local hockey team, and the negative comments fly. THis place never ceases to disappoint me.

Go jump to Bell or Virgin, and see how much money they put back into the community. Or, have a look at Bell's coverage map. Nothing better than paying roaming fees out at camp an hour away!!

I'm sticking with TBayTel and all they do for the community!

Glade to see them supporting the community!

To all you bashers, instead of posting on here and complaining, do something about it. call tbaytell and voice your concerns. the more there aware, which i'm sure there quite aware of the problems, then they can hopefully resolve the issues. when i did live in tbay, i only supported tbaytel with my phone service. i never once had an issue. Maybe i was one of the lucky few. Living in calgary, going to the saddledome, i'm lucky if i can get a few bars. But thats because theres over a thousand ppl in the building flooding the network system.
Sad how soo many rely on technology now days. what are you gonna do if one day all the power stops?!

This city is filled with Village Idiots. Tbaytel rebroadcasting Thunderwolves hockey games has nothing to do with the quality of their cellular service.

And to answer your "accusation", tbaytel has not broadcast Thunderwolves games in the past which means they never failed.

@becker - I think what pub27 was referring to, was the long standing monopoly that Tbaytel held over cellular service, and Tbaytel's continual attempts to block outside competition from entering the Thunder Bay market. I would also assume (which I realize, is a dangerous word to use) the reference also relates to the fact that TBaytel has continued to charge premium rates, for services which they cannot provide; and how it is perplexing that customers have not launched a lawsuit regarding false advertising, as Tbaytel continues to grossly exaggerate the services they offer, which continuing to charge customers for a service that they cannot provide. In addition to which they have continually expanded their line of services, without being able to adequately support their initial services (granted, their niche really did seem to be in providing land line service). But I am guessing you are aware of all of this, or you would not be criticizing another poster regarding his/her stupidity.

Your comments are valid and intelligent, somewhat misinformed but while I disagree with what you say, I will fight to the death your right to say it.
All respectable comments, however the Stupidity I was referring too, was how Pub27's comments do not relate in any way, shape, or form, to this article, and any other bashers for that matter. Say what you will about TbayTel and cell service, this article is good news, and it is a good thing for the community. Why anybody would post negative comments about cell service in this article is bizarre. I should however explain, I was not stating that pub27 is stupid, merely the comment and its base is stupidity.
