De Haan nets OT winner for basketball Wolves

Jessica de Haan came through in the clutch. The rookie centre hit the winning jump shot Saturday night with 22 seconds left in overtime, handing the Lakehead Thunderwolves an 83-80 road win over the Western Mustangs.

The rookie centre hit the winning jump shot Saturday night with 22 seconds left in overtime, handing the Lakehead Thunderwolves an 83-80 road win over the Western Mustangs.

The Wolves and Mustangs split the weekend set.

Katie Ulakovic had a career game for the visitors, scoring 25 points, including five-of-nine from three-point territory. The Mustangs forced overtime with four seconds left when Jenny Vaughan, who led all scorers with 29 points, hit a pair of free throws to tie the game 74-74.

Ayse Kalkan had 17 and Carolyn Fragale added an even dozen for the winning Wolves.

With the win Lakehead improves to 6-7 and a three-way tie for fourth spot in the OUA West, while Western dropped to 7-6.
The Wolves are four points ahead of seventh-place Guelph. The top six teams in the division make the playoffs.
