GUELPH, Ont. -- Kelin Ainsworth was the overtime hero for the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
The fourth-year forward, who could wrap up his LU career next weekend, scored 2:50 into the extra period on Saturday night to deliver a 2-1 win over the host Guelph Gryphons.
After the two teams played a scoreless first two periods, Carson Dubchak snapped the double goose eggs, beating Guelph goalie Scott Stajcer at the 10:25 mark of the third.
But Devin Green was unable to hang onto his shutout bid at the other end of the rink, Nick Trecapelli scoring for the second straight night in the final minute of regulation to send it to extra time.
The Thunderwolves (7-15-4), eliminated from OUA playoff contention with Friday’s 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Gryphons, conclude their 2015-16 campaign next weekend at home against the Laurier Golden Hawks.
Game time Friday and Saturday night is 7 p.m.
