Koivula rink advances to Northern Ontario semfinal despite loss

NORTH BAY -- Colin Koivula is in the Northern Ontario men’s curling championship semifinal, despite closing round-robin play with a pair of losses.

The Thunder Bay rink, which consists of lead Jamie Childs, second Jordan Potts and third Kory Carr, were humbled 7-0 on Saturday morning by Jordan Chandler’s Sudbury rink. The completed the pre-playoff portion of the event at 4-3, good for third place.

Chandler’s win earned him the other semifinal spot, after finishing the round robin with a 5-2 mark, behind five-time champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, who topped all teams with a 6-1 record.

Thunder Bay’s Dylan Johnston helped Koivula into the playoff round, knocking off Sudbury’s Tanner Horgan 9-6, securing the win with a steal of two in the 10th.

Horgan, Johnston and Geraldton’s Mike Assad all finished the week at 3-4.

Jacobs awaits the winner of the Koivula/Chandler match in Sunday's final. The semifinal is set for 7:30 p.m on Saturday.
