MADISON, Wis. – The Thunder Bay Goldcorp midget A Queens earned a fourth place out of eight teams at the CAN/AM Challenge Cup in Madison, Wis., after dropping a 6-2 decision to the Chicago Fury in the bronze medal contest Sunday morning.

Both teams were 3-1 entering the game with Thunder Bay’s lone setback in round robin play coming at the hands of the same Chicago side on Saturday.

The Fury jumped out to a 2-0 lead just past the 10-minute mark of the bronze match-up before the Queens got one back as Breanna Veneruz finished off the work of Vanessa Nicholl and Mary Flaherty at 11:44.

Chicago regained their two-goal cushion 12 seconds into the middle session, only to see the Queens come right back on the next shift and make it 3-2 thanks to another by Veneruz.

Lauren Lightbody and Zoe Hynnes drew assists on that tally.

However, Chicago added one more later in the frame and two others in the third to round out the scoring.

The Fury outshot Thunder Bay 22-16 with Taylor Gombola suffering the defeat in net.

The next out of town event for the Goldcorp midget A Queens will be the annual Fire on Ice tournament in Hayward, Wis., March 18-20.
