THUNDER BAY -- The demise of the St. Thomas Tommies hockey program has proven bountiful for the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

The Wolves on Tuesday announced second-year defenceman Dillon Donnelly is headed to Thunder Bay this fall, after the New Brunswick university dropped its hockey program earlier this spring.

The five-year Quebec Major Junior Hockey League veteran was a seventh-round draft pick of the Colorado Avalanche in 2011.
He had no goals and six assists in 25 games last season for St. Thomas.

Donnelly, 22, spent his junior career split between Moncton, Montreal, Quebec and Shawinigan, where he scored three times in 273 appearances.

“He’s a big, tough defenceman that plays with an edge takes care of his own end,” Lakehead coach Bill McDonald said in a statement.

“Dillon is a proven winner and he logged a lot of ice time in his first year in the CIS.  That experience is definitely a plus.”
