Kings name Malcolm Sutherland as development and video coach

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay Kings announced Monday the appointment of Malcolm Sutherland, who has joined the AAA hockey organization as its Development & Video Coach.

The long-time hockey man in the city brings a wealth of experience to the Kings program where he will work with each of the four member teams in the organization at the peewee, bantam, minor midget and major midget levels.

Among his many achievements in the game, Sutherland holds an Advanced II – Hockey Canada coaching title as well as National Coaching Certification Program full certification at NCCP III.

He is also Director of Player & Athlete Safety for StopConcussion.com and the creator and author of Safe4Sport Injury Prevention Toolkit and StopConcussion.com’s injury prevention program.

Sutherland earned his Masters of Science Kinesiology degree at Lakehead University in 2011, specializing in sport education and coaching, high performance, practice and skill acquisition/development, behavioural psychology, human motivation and injury prevention.

He also has an Honours Bachelor Physical Education degree from Lakehead back in 1991.

Sutherland has been a full member of Coaches Association of Canada (CAC) for sixteen years and is an accredited Chartered Professional Coach of which only a handful of professional hockey coaches across the country holds this prestigious designation.

A former Mentor with Hockey Canada’s Mentorship Program & Coach Developer and NCCP Facilitator/Instructor (Coach, Development I, II, High Performance) he has also been a minor hockey coach for more than 25 years in Thunder Bay coaching at IP to Junior, A – AAA as well as a pair of stints as an assistant coach for the Lakehead University Thunderwolves.

He also served as a scout for Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence at the under-18, U-22 and the senior female national program for eight years.

“We could not be more pleased to have Malcolm join our organization in his role,” stated Kings’ President Gary Linquist.

“His credentials within the game at this level are second to none and we know he will provide extensive development tools to assist while working alongside each of our coaching staffs and our players for the 2016-17 season and beyond,” added Linquist.

Tryouts for the Kings peewee, bantam, minor midget and major midget teams will commence in late May.
