WATERLOO, Iowa – The Thunder Bay Border Cats came up a few runs short in a slug-fest with the Waterloo Bucks.
The host squad scored five times in the sixth inning on Saturday night to break open a 9-9 tie and went on to defeat the Border Cats (1-17) by a 15-9 count.
Tyler Curtis was the offensive star for the Bucks, collecting three hits in five at bats, scoring four times and driving in a pair, including a home run.
Andrew Fregia had the hot bat for Thunder Bay, driving in four, three on a fifth-inning blast off Waterloo starter Brett Solano that lifted the Border Cats in front 6-5 at the time.
Gunnar Kay got the start for Thunder Bay, lasting 4.1 innings, and was lifted after giving up seven runs – just five earned – on eight hits and a walk.
Joey Burris was tagged with the loss, walking two and allowing a pair of hits and an equal number of runs in a third of an inning of work.
Cats pitchers walked 13 Bucks batters and struck out just six in the loss.
Bryce Reichmann, who took over in the fifth for the Bucks, earned the win.
The two teams wrap up their series on Sunday. The Border Cats have Monday off and return to action on Tuesday against La Crosse at Tbaytel Park at Port Arthur Stadium.
