Three first period goals were all the Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s hockey team could manage, but on Friday night, it’s one more than they would need.

Kyle Moir made 33 stops and Mitch Maunu, Kyle Hogg and Adam Sergeie connected to get the Wolves back on the winning track on the road in their penultimate first-half game with a 3-1 win over Guelph.

Thomas Kiriakou scored the lone goal for the Gryphons, a second-period power play tally at the 17:08 mark.

The win gave Lake head  (10-3-2) sole possession of second place in the OUA West Division, a point ahead of Waterloo and Laurier.

It was Lakehead’s first contest without OUA leading scorer Brock McPherson (shoulder) and Pierre-Marc Guilbault (foot), neither of whom is expected to play until after Christmas.
The Wolves wrap up first-half play on Saturday night, again in Guelph.

In other OUA action on Friday it was McGill over Nipissing 7-2, Concordia edged Ryerson 4-3 in OT, Carleton thumped RMC 8-2, Queen’s defeated Ottawa 8-6, UQTR needed extra time to beat Toronto 4-3, Windsor blanked UOIT 3-0 and Laurier recovered after blowing a two-goal lead to knock off Brock 3-2.
