The Thunderwolves went up early and hung on late to defeat the Waterloo Warriors 63-58 on  Friday night at the C. J. Sanders Fieldhouse.

With the win, Lakehead (13-4) retains their position at the top of the OUA West, a game up on second-place Windsor, while Waterloo (8-9) is tied with Brock for fifth in the division.

Senior guard Jamie Searle was the hero with 25 point and nine rebounds, while freshman post Ryan Thomson had 15 points. Andrew Hackner added 10 points while sophomore post Yoosrie Salhia dominated inside with 13 rebounds and three blocks.

Waterloo was led by Alan Goodhoofd’s 15 points while Ben Frisby added 10.

Lakehead opened the game on fire, building a 20-8 lead through 10 minutes. The Warriors slowly chiped into the lead, making it a ten-point game at halftime and 46-42 through three quarters.

The ‘Wolves shot 23-64 on the night to the Warriors’ 20-62 while hitting a crucial nine 3-pointers. Waterloo made two shots from beyond the arc.

Lakehed coach Scott Morrison said his team needs to improve their consistency.

“It was good to see our guys step up with some clutch stops and shots down the stretch,” Morrison said, “however, our challenge remains maintaining our focus for the entire 40 minutes.  In this conference a bad quarter can cost you a game and you cannot rest on anyone. Our goal is to come out focused tomorrow and set a tone if the first quarter that we can carry for 40 minutes.”

LU will face Waterloo again on Saturday night at 8 p.m.
