Adam Sergerie is the new captain of the Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey squad.
The fifth-year veteran said he’s eager to take on the new role.
“Being named captain is an honour and a privilege, especially because I know how much leadership there is in our dressing room,” Sergerie said in a release issued by the Thunderwolves.
“And with the history of our previous captains, I feel like I have big shoes to fill, but I’m looking forward to carrying on that great tradition.”
Sergerie served last season as one of three tri-captains with LU.
Lakehead coach Joel Scherban, a former Wolves captain in his own right, said he’s confident Sergerie, who had 10 goals and 11 assists in 24 games last season, was the right choice.
“I’m pleased to name Adam the team captain,” Scherban said in the same release.
“Adam has a tireless work ethic both on and off the ice and his community involvement is second to none. He has earned the respect of both his teammates and his coaches and will continue to be a tremendous leader and role model."
Jordan Smith, who graduated after 2010-11, was the last player to wear the ‘C’ for the Thunderwolves.
Defenceman Kalvin Sagert and forwards Andrew Wilkins and Trevor Gamache have been named assistant captains. Wilkins and Sagert were the other two tri-captains from last season.
"Kalvin, Andrew, and Trevor have all demonstrated the desire to work and compete to the best of their abilities on a daily basis,” Scherban added.
“Their work ethic will continue to rub off on the rest of the team as they lead them on the chase for an OUA championship."
The Wolves also on Monday finalized their 2012-13 roster, four days ahead of their scheduled non-conference opener against Ottawa Friday night at Fort William Gardens. Scherban plans to go with 26 players to start the season, 15 forwards, nine defencemen and two goalies.
Up front returnees include Sergerie, Wilkins, Victor Anilane, Brennan Menard, Matt Caria, Ryan Magill, Gamache, Jason Grecica, Mike Hammond, Keith Grondin, Thomas Frazee and Jake Carrick.
Rookie additions include Luke Judson, Carson Dubchak and Michael MacDonald.
On the blueline Sagert will be joined by Mike Quesnele, James DeLory, Luke Maw, Riley McIntosh, Mitch Fillman, Chris de la Lande and Danick Malouin, plus freshman Jay Gilbert.
In nets are returnees Alex Dupuis and Jeff Bosch.
