Alex Nemec-Bakk is a rarity.

Outside of Churchill’s Jarred White, Nemec-Bakk is probably the best quarterback on the senior high school football circuit.

And when his game is on, the 18-year-old can be a show-stopper in a league where the ground game rules the show.

His name deserved top billing on the marque on Friday afternoon at Fort William Stadium, as he threw for three first-quarter touchdowns to lead the Hammarskjold Vikings to a convincing 32-0 win over the shorthanded St. Ignatius Falcons, missing several players to injury and a hockey tournament.

“We had a good start there, got our good receiver Nick Potter back there and he was a good target for me to hit,” said Nemec-Baak, who connected on a 34-yard strike to Potter late in the first that gave the Vikings a 21-0 lead.

Potter, who briefly considered attending Lakehead University after graduating last summer, finished with four catches for 80 yards in his return to the Vikings.

“He came back and decided he wanted to play some football for us and we’re glad to have him back,” said Nemec-Bakk, whose Vikings improved to 3-1-0, good for second spot in the Superior Secondary Schools Athletic Association standings.

Having a passing game makes a huge difference, he added, noting he’s just starting to click with his receivers.

“It makes it harder for teams to defend us and stuff. It gives us another dimension,” he said.

That’s just what coach Mike Judge is looking for from his veteran pivot, a nice complement that includes a strong running game buoyed by tough-as-nails running back Xander Hassell.

Judge said he trusts his players to get the job done , and more important, know what they need to do on their own.

“To their credit, they were calling a lot of the early plays. Those were audible from the QB to the receivers,” Judge said. “And they made it work.

Like Nemec-Bakk, Judge knows the importance of being able to throw the ball.

“It makes a big difference, otherwise the other teams just want to crowd the box on our two running backs, and even with horses like Xander and Kurt Folino back there, there’s no way you can run against 10 in the box, at least we can’t.

“When you’re able to spread it out it just opens it up for us.”

The Falcons (1-2-1) had little choice but to go with less experience on the field, with stars like Liam Fors, Jon Krawchuk and Connor McFarlane missing in action.

The Vikings made them pay early and often, Nemec-Bakk hitting Mitchell Hannusch with the opening score just 4:25 into the one-sided contest.

Hassell dragged the Falcons defenders into the end zone from 16 yards out to give Hammarskjold a 14-0 lead, then midway through the second Nemec-Bakk, who finished with 191 yards passing on 10 completions, spotted Keenan Postans up the middle for a 16-yard score that made it 28-0.

Hannusch added a 32-yard field goal to cap the scoring in the first half.

In other senior boys action:

Churchill 79, Superior 0: Jarred White threw for 272 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the Trojans (3-0-1) to the most one-sided victory in the senior loop this season. Tight end Justin Fui had 139 yards receiving and a score.

St. Patrick 16, Westgate 6: Kyle Mercier had a 45-yard TD reception and Jordan LeBlanc kicked three field goals to lead the Saints (3-1) to the win. The Tigers (1-3) who managed just 245 yards of offence, got 158 yards rushing and a touchdown from Caleb White.

Mike Doromko and the Churchill Trojans should be ashamed of themselves! This game was over in the first quarter and all starters should have been pulled and let the 2nd team play. They disgustingly ran up the score and laughed at the opposing team while they did it.

There is no room for this in high school athletics, and just like in the pro's there is a certain ethics that should be followed. I offer my sincerest apologies to the Superior players and coaching staff on what was a disgusting display of unsportsmanship I have ever witnessed.

Mike Doromko should take a hard look in the mirror and remember when he played minor league football on a team that couldn't win a game and how that made him feel as a player, or losing a game in high school with the Vikings. Losing hurts, and losing in this manor is just kicking a young player while he is down.

Shameless!!!!

Get the facts first before you bash some one who spends countless hours coaching every week. The final score was not an act of poor sportsmanship and had you stayed past the end of the second quarter that would have been clear. I did and at the end of the game...there were no hard feelings because it wasn't necessary! I played high school sports and was also on a team that lost our fair share of games and I would rather play hard and lose with my head held high then have someone pass me the ball and then get out of my way for a "mercy touchdown". I think your negative comments leave a poor message for the Superior players....that they should feel bad because they keep losing, that is not the case they should feel proud whether they won or lost, as long as they played their hardest. Most coaches teach this to players......so I assume that clearly you are not a coach.
To the coaches of both Superior and Churchill...keep up the great work, it is appreciated!

To the contrary my fellow poster. I have coached both minor league football and High School both junior and senior. I have given up countless hours to a sport that I played since I was six through University.
I did not ask for a mercy touchdown and don't think it was warranted as you are correct it would just put more of a sour taste in the players mouths. I also want to clarify that this is not an attack on Mike's personal character as I have known him since I was six and have the upmost respect for the gentleman, as both an educator and a football coach. I understand how much dedication is put into coaching these kids, how many missed suppers with our own families we endure, that is not the being mocked at. Teaching our athletes to always play their hardest is one thing, but teaching them to win with dignity is another lesson that is not taught in a 79-0 win. Leaving the starting QB in still passing, blitzing the other teams offense late in the 3rd, these were not needed.

questionable defense? says:
I do believe that "teacher" still does not have all of the facts...... Mr. Doromko didn't put in his backup QB because he was injured. And as for this not being a personal attack?? Your comments were directed at him personally not the coaching staff in general. I also noticed that you chose not to give your name? If you have such a history with Mr. Doromko why did you choose to place you comments on a public forum rather that go to him directly, if you had done so you may have had all the facts and not hurt anyones reputation unnecessarily. Think before you speak, or in this case write....that is a lesson for all coaches, players and students!

Football Coach says:
As you may have noticed I had several starters injured already on the side line not on the field. All second string players were in for the 2nd half. I coach these kids (1st and 2nd string) to play hard when they are on the field and they did. We ran the ball the hole second half to try and run the clock out. I can't do much more unless I kneel the ball every offensive possession and I feel that would rub it in even more.

to all the people who hate on churchill , grow up , they played hard and they are a very good team with a lot of talent. there was not much they could do with all that time on the clock and they don't even have a back quarter back because of all the injuries they have so it was hard for them to do much when they are strictly a passing team . also if people want to keep complaining come watch a game and see how the refs throw flags every two seconds for churchill and make horrible calls .

former player says:
As a former player under Mike Doromko I am one to know he is the best coach I've ever had, his dedication and coaching to his team is expressed through the playing of his team. They play hard every down and make you earn it. If you do know anything about this team you would know that the trojans were in fact in a similar situation last year in the northern bowl. They showed up being excited to play in the rogers when being beat 31-0 at half. To be embarrassed that bad in probably the most important game of the year is devastating. But Mike Doromko and that coaching staff teaches their players to not give up and not have things handed to them. They came out a different team during second half to be moments shy away from coming back 34-28.
