Fifth-year forward Andrew Wilkins has been named captain of the Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey team.
The Pickering, Ont. native, entering his final season with the team, said he was excited to get the news.
“It’s an honour to be named captain, and I’ll take great pride in leading by example day in and day out to help our team reach the goals we’ve set for this year,” Wilkins said in a release issued Monday.
Coach Bill McDonald said it wasn’t an easy choice, but he thinks it was the right one.
“Since the start of training camp, I’ve kept a close eye on who would be a good leader and the best man to wear the "C" on the front if his jersey,” McDonald said.
“There have been a number of worthy candidates, but in the end the coaching staff is pleased to have selected Andrew to lead the pack. He has the respect of his teammates and is a leader both on and off the ice.”
The Wolves, who open pre-season play Friday when they host the Prince Edward Island Panthers, also named three assistants.
Forward Trevor Gamache and defencemen Mike Quesnele and Mitch Fillman will wear the coveted ‘A’ this season.
