A premier international baseball event will be making a return to the city, just two years later than organizers were anticipating.

Baseball Canada announced on Sunday that Thunder Bay had been selected as the host city of the 2017 18U Baseball World Cup, the same tournament that was hosted in 2010, but was then known as the World Junior Baseball Championship.

Organizers have said in the past the tournament would be held in late summer if they landed it again.

The Thunder Bay International Baseball Association had been bidding on the 2015 edition of the tournament, which the International Baseball Federation awarded to Japan.

However, the international body provided a consolation prize by awarding the next tournament to Canada.

The 2010 tournament in Thunder Bay saw a total attendance of 50,000 people.

Attempts to reach local organizers Sunday night for comment were not successful.
