LIEGE, Belgium - Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland won the opening-day prologue of the Tour de France to capture the leader's yellow jersey on Saturday.

Riders set off one by one for the start of the 99th race — a 6.4-kilometre individual time trial in the Belgian city of Liege.

Cancellara collected his fifth Tour prologue victory by clocking 7 minutes, 13 seconds. He outpaced second-placed Bradley Wiggins of Britain by 7 seconds. Sylvain Chavanel of France was third, also 7 seconds back.

Defending Tour champion Cadel Evans was 13th.

Giro D'Italia winner Ryder Hesjedal of Victoria was tied for 14th place, 18 seconds back.
