Sioux Lookout Hydro Inc. is an incorporated company owned by the Shareholder, the Municipality of Sioux Lookout. This small local distribution company serves the Municipality of Sioux Lookout located in beautiful Northwestern Ontario. Sioux Lookout is located halfway between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg, north of the Trans-Canada Highway. The beautiful landscape is enhanced as a result of the Town’s placement within a network of lakes, endless forest and the Canadian Shield.

Sioux Lookout Hydro is committed to delivering safe and reliable electricity to our approximately 2,800 households and businesses in a service area of 539 square kilometers, maintaining a 25 kV distribution system.

Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, the Working Foreperson is responsible as a working supervisor for participating and providing technical direction and guidance in the construction, operation and maintenance of the electrical distribution system and substation, in a safe and efficient manner on all voltages within the utility’s service area.

Key Responsibilities

o Participates in and ensures the safe and proper completion of all types of work related to overhead line construction, rebuilds and improvements.
o Participates in and ensures the safe and proper completion of all types of work related to underground construction, conversions and improvements.
o Participates in and ensures the safe and proper completion of all types of work related to the operation and maintenance of the electrical distribution systems and substation
o Participates in and ensures the safe and proper completion of live wire work.
o Responds to and performs emergency repairs, trouble-shoots and restores electric power to overhead and underground electrical distribution systems, as required.
o Connects and disconnects residential, commercial and industrial customers for service changeovers, non-payments, move-ins and customer requests for both overhead and underground services.
o Installs various types of metering equipment for customer service connections.
o Performs line clearing and tree trimming duties.
o Installs, repairs and trouble-shoots street lighting and traffic control installations and equipment
o Plans, organizes and assigns work to crew members, to ensure the most efficient on-site use of personnel and equipment.
o Ensures all work is coordinated and performed in a safe and efficient manner for both the worker and the public.
o Leads tailboard conferences to ensure that all crew members are aware of the scope of work to be performed, their role in completing the work, that safe work procedures are followed, ensures tailboards are completed and work is completed safely.
o Collaborates with customers, contractors and others to evaluate, organize and safely complete jobs, consistent with all requirements, rule, regulations, policies and standards.
o Deals with the public in courteous manner regarding safety, the Corporation’s policies procedures, maintenance of service and disconnection of service.
o Reports to the Operations Manager to advise of on-site job conditions, work progress and any problems encountered.
o Trains and instructs any lineperson apprentices in the theoretical and practical aspects of all job related activities.
o Provides technical direction to others.
o Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of current work methods and use of tools and equipment, as required.
o Completes crew timesheets, accident reports, outage reports, work orders and any other forms or reports that may pertain to work and employee assignments.
o Requisitions materials from stores and ensures that all necessary tools and equipment are available to perform the work.
o Provides an on-call, stand-by service outside normal working hours, handling trouble/emergency calls, including providing job related advice and assistance to other emergency units.
o Performs scheduled and unscheduled overtime, as required.
o Understands the workers’, employers’, and supervisors’ responsibilities according to the definition in the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
o Ensures the safety of co-workers and the public through safe and proper use of equipment and by following all pertinent safety rules, regulations and procedures.
o Responsible for following all applicable safety legislation, rules, regulations, work procedures and Corporation’s health and safety policies and procedures.
o Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.


Mandatory Qualifications

o Must have successful completion of a Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
o Qualified Journeyman Lineperson including the successful completion of the Mearie Linesperson Training Program, or equivalent certificate.
o Must have a minimum of five years’ experience as a Journeyman Linesperson and possess superior trade knowledge of the utility’s distribution system and substation.
o Must be able to work from work orders, specification, standards and instructions and to interpret prints, sketches and diagrams.
o Must have demonstrated ability to present a positive public image and demonstrate good interpersonal skills when dealing with the public.
o Must have demonstrated leadership capabilities including interpersonal and motivational skills to effectively direct the line crew and deal with fellow employees in a positive and constructive manner.
o Must have excellent planning, organizational, communication and written skills.
o Must have a demonstrated commitment to safety, a proven safety record, be competent within the meaning of the Occupation Health & Safety Act and have a complete understanding of E&USA Safety Rules and the Utility Work Protection Code.
o Must be willing to work stand-by duty, overtime, on-call, shift work and emergency call-outs.
o Must have and maintain a valid Class A driver’s licence with “Z” endorsement..
o Must have and maintain valid First Aid and CPR certifications.
o Must be in good health and physically capable of performing assigned tasks.
