FORT FRANCES, Ont. - Police and paramedics rescued a stranded tourist in Quetico Park after his canoe drifted from shore Tuesday.

The Rainy River District detachment of the OPP on Tuesday received reports from a Minnesota tourist outfitter that one of the camp patrons had sent a Spot locator message indicating they needed help on Kawnipi Lake. The tourist was in the middle of a canoe trip at the time.

Police received GPS coordinates and attempted to locate the tourist that day. Police say they were unsuccessful due to the weather conditions at the time.

On Wednesday, police and paramedics located the canoeists by air.

Police say the canoeist is now safe.

The canoe was also later retrieved by police.
