THUNDER BAY -- The city and EcoSuperior are offering residents with an easy way to get rid of their Halloween pumpkins.

Instead of sending it to the curb in a trash bag, residents are urged to drop their pumpkins, corn stalks and straw at one of three collection bins located across the city.

Since 1995 the Great Pumpkin Compost Collection has resulted in more than 360 tonnes of unused pumpkins and other compostable materials being diverted from the city landfill.

Program coordinator Shannon Costigan said it is expected that between 25 and 30 tonnes will be diverted this year.

“It goes to the municipal compost city at the landfill where it is managed and it decomposes,” Costigan said. “The city then offers the compost to residents for free in the spring.”

There are collection bins sent up at Country Fair Plaza, the Lakehead Labour Centre and the Westfort Playfields on Neebing Avenue to collect the waste until Nov. 10.
