THUNDER BAY – Lakehead University is holding an Indigenous Veterans Day ceremony on Monday afternoon.
In a release issued on Friday, the university says the event, scheduled for 12:15 p.m. in the Agora, will feature an exhibit of photos and artifacts from the world wars, which will remain on display through Friday.
The Indigenous Veterans of Treaty 3 was a project developed in 2018 by the Fort Frances Museum and Cultural Centre, Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung Historical Centre and Couchiching’s Glenn Jourdain, who laid the ground for the project through his research.
Jourdain died this past July.
The exhibit focuses on the First World War and the Second World War, but also includes other wars to the present day, highlighting veterans and their triumphs and setbacks, the roles of Indigenous women and the mixing of Indigenous and military culture.
There will also be artifacts and displays showcasing veterans of Anishinabek Territory-Robinson Superior Treaty and Metis veterans.
While everyone is invited to visit the display, COVID-19 restrictions are in place, including a requirement to be fully vaccinated.
