The 2022 cross country ski season is coming to an end

It’s been a challenging but successful season.

The cross country skiing season and Thunder Bay is coming to an end and it’s been a challenging but successful season according to local cross country ski club owners.

"Lots of skiers. I found people really enjoyed it but also the conditions have been very harsh," said Lappe Nordic Ski Centre owner Tuija Puiras.

"We had very cold conditions and then the next day a snow storm and then back into the deep freeze. So, people have been very hardy and they've been skiing a lot."

Dave Suttie, Kamview Nordic Centre manager, says it was nice to be able to extend the season with the unusually large amounts of snow that we’ve been having this spring.

"The past couple of years with COVID and low snow, we've had to shut down in early March," said Suttie.

"It's kind of nice to have an extended season here so that people can make up for lost time for the past couple of years."

Suttie says that while they were not able to hold as many events as they want to do this year due to COVID-19 they have a few summer events coming up including trail runs and he hopes that next year he will be able to go back to normal season operations and events

"Hopefully if all the COVID regulations and stuff are relaxed, we're kind of hoping we can get back at a normal season with the chalet open doing our events and stuff this year," said Suttie.
