THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead Thunderwolves have turned to the Golden State to help fill a vacancy between the pipes.
The OUA men’s hockey team on Thursday announced it has landed goaltender Blake Weyrick, of Santa Monica, Calif., they’re first recruit heading into the 2019-20 campaign.
Weyrick, a three-year member of the U.S. National Development program before spending two seasons at Buffalo’s Canisius College.
The 23-year-old arrives in Thunder Bay with three years of eligibility remaining.
Weyrick played 20 games for Canisius College last season, posting a 3.16 goals against average and a .896 save percentage.
“I’m extremely excited to join the Lakehead hockey program and community,” he said in a release issued by the team.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to join this group of players and staff and contribute to bringing a championship to Thunder Bay. Now it’s time to put in the work this off-season and get prepared to bring my best to the team this fall. I can’t wait to get started.”
Second-year coach Andrew Wilkins said the 6-foot-3, 200-pound netminder will be a solid addition to a team seeking a replacement for fourth-year goalie Devin Green, who graduated this past season.
“I’m happy to have Blake be our first commitment of the new class of recruits. He has an impressive pedigree with high-level playing experience which makes him a great addition to our roster."
Weyrick will battle fellow NCAA transfer Nic Renyard for playing time.
