DULUTH, Minn. – The Thunder Bay Border Cats aren’t having much success this season against the Duluth Huskies.
The Cats rallied from three down in the sixth inning on Thursday night to tie their game against the first-place Huskies 3-3, but the host squad scored three of their own in the seventh at Wade Stadium, downing Thunder Bay 6-4.
It was the Border Cats third straight loss and 12th in their last 13 games, dropping the last place Northwoods League club to 5-17 in first-half play and on the cusp of elimination from the North Division title.
Reliever Luke Malone, who surrendered three runs on three hits in a third of an inning, took the loss. Justin Mitchell delivered a two-run single in the seventh and Augie Isaacson plated the third to break open the tie game.
Garrett Saunders doubled, scored twice and drove in a pair for Thunder Bay, who also got a two-hit performance from 1B Gunner Hellstrom.
Duluth reliever Tim Holdgrafer, who tossed the final three innings, allowing a hit and a run, was credited with the win.
Starter Troy Newell allowed just one hit over five innings, walking six and striking out four for the Huskies.
Thunder Bay returns home for a rematch against the Huskies to kick off a seven-game homestand. First-place Duluth (17-6) has won all three matches against the Border Cats this season.
