LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – Thunder Bay-born coach Murray Nystrom is out of a job, after the University of Lethbridge cut its men's and women's hockey program.

Nystrom, in two seasons behind the Pronghorns bench, led the team to a combined 14-37-5 record, making the playoffs in 2018-19, but missing the postseason in 2019-20.

School officials said continued cuts by the Alberta government are to blame for the decsion.

"We have had to make several difficult decisions in the past few months and this one is equally challenging," says Mike Mahon, U of L president and vice-chancellor, in a release issued on Monday.

"The Pronghorn hockey programs have been a source of great pride for our athletes, students, alumni, donors, sponsors, the campus community and supporters throughout southern Alberta. I know this news will significantly impact everyone associated with these programs."

Prior to joining the Lethbridge coaching staff, Nystrom spent 17 seasons coaching the Brock Badgers, including a 1-0 overtime win in 2008 over the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Game 3 of their best-of-three OUA semifinal.

Fifty-two players were also affected by the decision, as well as the remaining coaches on both teams.

The remaining Pronghorn athletic programs, which include basketball, soccer, track and field, swimming and women's rugby, will continue to be funded by the University.
