THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay’s Matt Murray has inked a new three-year, $11.25-million deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 22-year-old backstopped the Penguins to a Stanley Cup win as a rookie, tying an NHL record with 15 playoff wins.

He made his NHL debut last season, and took over starting duties in the playoffs when Marc-Andre Fleury was sidelined.

Murray also was named to Team North America for the recent World Cup of Hockey.

At present the former American Hockey League goaltender of the year is recovering from a hand injury.
