RED LAKE, Ont. – The Thunder Bay North Stars six-game winning streak is no more.

The host Red Lake Miners scored two goals 55 seconds apart in the final three minutes of regulation to pull away from the Stars and break open a 5-5 tie en route to a 7-5 triumph.

It erased a valiant third-period comeback by Thunder Bay, who entered the frame down 5-2.

Joel Willan scored a pair of goals four minutes apart and Jayden Mrakic tied it with 4:11 to go with his third goal of the year.

It had been pretty much all Miners until then.

Hunter Halcrow opened the scoring for Red Lake 1:42 into the contest, the lone goal of the first period.

Jacob Anntonen and Jacob Brown tallied 1:48 apart to start the second, giving the Stars their only lead of the night.

But the lead lasted less than three minutes, Spencer Milen beating Seth McKay at 7:154, the first of four goals in a 7:10 span as the Miners jumped in front by three.

Leighton Holstein, Jordan Baranesky and Ryan Howe were the goal scorers.

Holstein scored the eventual game-winner at 17:02 of the third and Ryan Patteron iced it with an empty netter 55 seconds later.

McKay stopped just 24 of the 30 shots he faced. Samuel Gendron picked up the win for Red Lake, turning aside 40 of 45 North Stars shots.

It was Thunder Bay’s first regulation loss since Sept. 27.

The Stars fell to 14-2-1, while second-place Red Lake improved to 10-6-1.
