The Carolina Hurricanes have named Eric Staal as their new captain.

Staal, 25, takes over from veteran Rod Brind’Amour, who stepped down, citing poor performance.

"The time has come now for Eric to assume the top leadership role for his teammates," said Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford in a statement released by the team. "This is part of the rebuilding process for the Hurricanes, as Eric is the player around whom the team will be structured.

"We feel confident in Eric’s ability to lead his teammates and are excited to begin this next era."

Staal becomes the 13th player to wear the ‘C’ in franchise history, dating back to Rick Ley in 1979, when the team was known as the Hartford Whalers.

The Thunder Bay native, the second overall draft pick in 2003, has 33 points in 36 games this season.
