THUNDER BAY – The city’s next potential NHL star is being groomed at home.

Thunder Bay North Stars forward Keighan Gerrie on Monday earned a spot on the National Hockey League’s Central Scouting mid-term rankings, slotted in at 140th on the list, ahead of June’s NHL draft in Vancouver.

The 17-year-old Gerrie, who is in Alberta for the Canadian Junior Hockey League prospects game, is second in the Superior International Junior Hockey League in scoring with 53 points, putting up 26 goals in 29 games.

In addition to NHL scouts, Gerrie has caught the attention of U.S. college teams and visited Bowling Green University in Ohio earlier this season.

Gerrie, who turns 18 on April 6, was a 2017 12th-round draft pick of the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights. He’s looking to become the first player drafted to the NHL out of the SIJHL. Former Stars standouts Carter Hutton and Robert Bortuzzo used the league as an eventual springboard to the big leagues, but both played at higher levels before making the jump.
