It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Steven Slobodzian Sr., age 91, who passed on March 1, 2015 with his loving family at his side, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre.

Steve was born in Fort William on January 10, 1924 to parents Peter and Jennie Slobodzian.  Steve was a hard worker starting out at the age of 14, helping his father in the bush camps, doing anything that needed to be done.

He was hired by Powell Equipment as a mechanic and worked his way up thru management to equipment instructor.

After a long and distinguished career at Powell Equipment, Steve never slowed down.  In 1979 Steve formed S&J Equipment Ltd, with his son James.  At the age of 91, he was still active in the company, going to the shop daily, doing the books, and troubleshooting mechanical issues for family and friends.  Steve was a passionate and caring man whose family was most important to him.  He was always there for words of advice and had a way of making you feel special.

His strong love for dogs was evident by the many family pets over the years.  He was known to stop complete strangers just to say, “jeez that’s a nice dog.”

He also shared in his son’s passion for the Toronto Maple Leafs and they enjoyed many games together.  Many days were spent enjoying his regular coffee meetings, and his friends who would stop by the shop for a visit, a story and maybe even a deal.

If you knew Steve you knew also of his great love for his many cars and he was so proud to still be able to drive his Mercedes at 91.  Steve was an active member of Lodge 947 Loyal Order of the Moose and continued to lend a hand there whenever needed.

Steve is lovingly remembered by his son Steven Jr, daughter-in-law Georgina, granddaughters Lyndsy and Stacey, and sons James and Kenneth.

He is also survived by sisters Pauline, Rose and Helen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his wife Olga, his parents Peter and Jennie, and brother Joseph.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2015 when family and friends will gather in St. Peter’s R.C. Church, 700 McIntosh Street for the Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Terry Sawchuk.

The interment will follow at St. Andrew’s R.C. Cemetery.  Visitation for friends will be held on Wednesday, March 4th from 5-7 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street where the Vigil Service will begin at 7 p.m.

As expressions of sympathy donations in Steve’s memory to New Hope Dog Rescue, P.O. Box 10191, Thunder Bay, ON, P7B 6T7 would be greatly appreciated.  online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
