THUNDER BAY — To promote movement and give kids the chance to try something new, Legacy Dance Co. is hosting free classes this the summer.
Every Monday and Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m., kids ages two to five can take part in the organization's Mini Movers class.
The program is designed to allow young dancers the opportunity to explore rhythm and movement with a focus on creativity, confidence, and connections. They're also encouraged to move at their own pace.
Amanda Giba is the studio’s office manager.
“There are not a lot of programs out there for youth, so (we) just wanted to give them the opportunity to try an activity that they possibly can't afford to try or continue an activity that they love by offering the free classes,” she said.
The classes were offered last year as well, but Giba said it’s on a bigger scale this year.
“I know with my kids we struggle a lot with finding things to do. I find that either anything to do costs money or you need a vehicle to get to it.
“This just makes it more accessible for kids,” she said.
Jamie Barry brought her daughter Andie to the Mini Movers class.
“It's allowing her a little bit more of an introduction to dance, getting her out of her comfort zone, exploring some activities.
“It's hard when you don't know what they're going to like – we're shy, but we're getting there."
Barry said the program is beneficial for more than just her own family.
“I'm really lucky that we were able to secure a spot for this because it gives us something to do throughout the summer, that's a little bit less of a commitment," Barry said.
“I also work in the social welfare system where we see lots of families where sometimes the deterrent is that financial piece, so having access to those services and being able to take advantage of those programs within the city is really important,” she said.
Andie tried out the class twice so far and has been enjoying them.
The organization is also hosting free classes for older kids on Tuesdays.
