Litter clean-up initiative launches for month of May

Volunteers collected over 20 bags of litter in the Bay & Algoma neighbourhood in just under an hour for the start of Spring Up to Clean Up.

THUNDER BAY — The launch of the 28th annual Spring Up to Clean Up in the Bay and Algoma district on Thursday included a kick-off to clean up the community.

The annual litter collection initiative runs for the entire month of May and already has more registrants than last year, according to Kennedy Bucci, the rethinking waste coordinator at EcoSuperior.

"Our registration just continues to grow every year. It's such a snowball effect where people are seeing other people in the community cleaning up and then they think they want to register.

"This year we're already at 9,500 registrants. Last year I think we had 7,000."

Bucci said a lot of schools are also participating this year.

A card is being handed out to volunteers so EcoSuperior can track the waste collected.

Lee Amelia is the city's waste diversion coordinator. He said the clean-up is easy and can be disposed of with your weekly garbage.

"You need to go on the EcoSuperior website to register for clean-up supplies or a clean-up kit and they give you everything that you need.

"Everybody wants to have a little boost of civic pride, and this is the time of year to do it. It's a really easy action anyone can take. You get out, pick up some litter, throw it . . . curbside with your garbage and the garbage staff will take it away on garbage day."
