NHL should consider bringing back the tie

National Hockey League general managers seem to have agreed on changes to regular season overtime, some sort of three-on-three format.   Now, the players have to agree to the changes to make things happen.

One of the issues to be worked out are whether to change the five-minute extra period, or to add some component of three-on-three after four-on-four.

If it's still tied, then it would go to a shootout.   It's the number of shootouts that has the GM's wanting to make changes, as they don't like those results having a big impact on teams making the playoffs.

Here's a radical thought, what about scrapping the shootout and going back to awarding a single point to both teams if it's tied after overtime?  What was wrong with tie games anyway?

When and why did we start thinking ties were rather what you'd see Don Cherry wear than end up in the standings?  I would prefer seeing that instead of the carnival-type shootout which may be exciting, but in the end kind of  unfulfilling for the fan.

If we really want to make some changes that make an impact, perhaps going to a different point system which has been used internationally might be the way to go here.

Three points for a regulation time win,  two points for an overtime or shootout win, and one point for an overtime loss.
