THUNDER BAY -- Jon Green has been selected as this year’s Holiday Hero recipient.

Green, who is an outreach worker for Elevate NWO, officially received his $500 prize courtesy of Sullivan and Associates on Wednesday afternoon.

He said he was surprised to learn that TBnewswatch.com readers chose him as the 2023 Holiday Hero.

“There’s a lot of people that I think are heroes out there,” Green said. “The people that I work with … people in other organizations. We’re all working together. It’s not just me.”

Green was also honoured for his work last year by the City of Thunder Bay.

He was the recipient of a Mayor’s Community Safety Award for the empathy and sensitivity he displays while providing support to homeless individuals.

On a typical weekday, Green is making the rounds at the homeless encampments in Thunder Bay to check in on people’s welfare and to deliver supplies such as food and clothing.

“For me, it’s just about being part of the solution instead of being part of the problem,” Green said. “Any way to help always makes my day a little bit better.

“You think you're having a bad day and then you go see what someone else is having to live through. It really makes you appreciate what you have and who you have in your life.”

Green said he’s not planning to stop his work any time soon.

“I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing and try to do the next right thing,” Green added.

Blythe Haynen, Heather and Ken White, Rob Dueck, and Kimm White were also finalists for the Holiday Hero award.
