'A true Westfort day to cap off summer': 43rd annual fair returns

Aaron Gillingham, owner and operator of The Sal restaurant, said everyone at the fair seemed to be having a good time, the sun was out and everyone was enjoying themselves.

THUNDER BAY — The 43rd annual Westfort Street Fair was indeed a "big party" on Saturday.

Frederica Street was full of vendors and thousands of attendees enjoying the day.

Aaron Gillingham, owner and operator of The Sal restaurant, has been a part of the fair for nine years.

“There are thousands of people here. Everyone seems to be having a good time, the sun is out and everyone's enjoying themselves,” Gillingham said.

Gillingham, who is also on the planning committee for the fair, said a lot of work goes into the yearly event.

“It's amazing to see the event continue to grow," Gillingham said.

"Every year, we get a little bigger, we get a little better, we get a little faster and obviously, you can see that the support from the community is huge, not just from Westfort but from Thunder Bay and rural towns as well."

“It's nice to be able to welcome everyone to have a true Westfort day to cap off summer," he added.

A group of volunteers from the Dayna Elizabeth Karle Addiction Recovery Foundation, more commonly known as the DEK Foundation, also had a booth set up at the Westfort Street Fair on Saturday.

“I have incredible volunteers that love to give back,” said Carolyn Karle, the foundation's founder.

“Part of recovery is giving back to your community, so they're thrilled to come out and help. We love being part of the community, seeing all the people and getting to know people.”

Karle, who was also born in Westfort, said it’s great to see the community come together for an event like this.

The fair ran until 5 p.m. on Saturday.
