This is slowly turning into a nice little routine: each year, at the SEMA Show, Chevrolet unveils the latest variant of their Camaro COPO, a stripped-out car destined to race in NHTSA drag racing series.
For the 2017 model year, the manufacturer showcased a totally new Camaro, a direct descendant to the Camaro born in 1969 when a motivated dealer found a way to drop a 7.0-litre engine in the Camaro.
Only 69 units will be built, and will receive one of three engines: a supercharged LS V8 generating 580 horsepower, a naturally aspirated 427 cubic-inch V8 with 470 horsepower and the latest member of the LT family with 410 horsepower on tap. Regardless of the powerplant, a three-speed automatic transmission comes standard.
The rest of the car has been lightened, features a roll cage for safety and lots of strengthened parts. The car should be able to run through the quarter mile in 9.7 seconds… in its slowest iteration. With the supercharged V8, the COPO can cover the same distance in 8.5 seconds.
If you want one, be prepared to pay between USD$90,000 and USD$110,000.
